The first lira was produced on January 5, 1843 in the Ottoman Empire. In 1925, it was named Turkish lira. First it was called the Ottoman lira. There is a picture of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on the Turkish lira. Turkish lira is used as currency in Turkey, Northern Cyprus and Northern Syria. The symbol is the double lined letter t (₺).
